Caution- Feeding Jerky Treats manufactured in China

By November 19, 2013 Uncategorized

Bulletin from the Canadian Veterinary Medical Association

Illnesses and deaths in dogs and cats that may be connected to the consumption of pet jerky treats manufactured in China have been reported in Canada and U.S.A. These products are being investigated, however, because there is currently no scientific evidence of a specific toxin in the products, they remain available in stores. The Canadian Veterinary Medical Association recommends that pet owners seek advice from their veterinarian on treats that are safe and healthy to feed their pet. Pet owners who choose to feed jerky tenders or strips made of chicken, duck, sweet potato, or dried fruit should watch their pet closely for signs of illness.

  • Decreased appetite
  • Decreased activity
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea(Sometimes with blood or mucus)
  • Increased water consumption and/or increased urination

If your pet becomes ill, stop feeding the treats, contact your veterinarian immediately and save the treat package so that your veterinarian can report the necessary details to the Canadian Veterinary Medical Association at communications@cvma-acmv.org or 1-800-567-2862.
